Some people like the tarnished look, others prefer their zils brightly polished. It is simply a personal preference. If corrosion is occurring (pitting or divots), clean with metal polish to stop the corrosion.
If you spill a sports drink (like Gatorade) clean and dry your zils immediately. Remove the elastics if they were wet. Sports drinks do ugly things to raw metal.
